FAT BUDDHA

Fat Buddha? No! A Marathon Racer

Life seems beautiful when you accomplish the challenges each day. I never dreamt of having a healthy life that I would cherish. Yes! I cherish every moment of life. I cherish every single challenge as if it would transform me into someone worth fighting for. Fighting? I guess that’s the right word to describe my life. My journey is a constant battle. A battle to get in shape. A battle to start a keto diet, and a constant battle to run.

The scariest thing for me was to RUN! I would rather run away from this thought than actually run. The workout was never my thing. I envied those for whom running was a cup of tea. I wasn’t able to breathe properly after going upstairs to my home before losing weight. I hated my body. I hated myself for not being able to do a brisk walk. I tried multiple times to start with a brisk walk, but my body never allowed me to do so. You’re reading it right. I’m training myself for a marathon. A man who considered running the nightmare is now a trainee for a marathon.

I trained my body each day to achieve the maximum. A Fat Buddha who worked day and night to defeat his every weakness. Months ago, I needed a quick fix. I needed a miracle. I’m fat, I need to starve, was the thought in my brain. I don’t look good in jeans. It went on and on! A vicious cycle, until I decided to run.

Let me surprise you! I started running in the Manchester Marathon because I considered running an extremely integral part of losing weight. This marathon was not easy. I wasn’t trained and had no stamina to run, but I had the SELF-CONFIDENCE. I started slowly with the couch to 5k app week on week. I gradually built up my pace. Guess what? Within a few weeks of consistent hard work, I was able to run 5k, then 10k, and then finally half a marathon. Anyone who is on a voyage to weight loss can relate and feel the amount of happiness I felt that day. I learned a very interesting fact that day about mankind. We, humans, have two sides. A self-attacking side and a self-strengthening side. It’s totally up to us, which side we’ll let win. My self-attacking side was constantly telling me that “it is the maximum you can do, give up! You cannot run more; otherwise you will die”. I was running along the canal when my self-strengthening side told me that “Hurrah! You’ve completed half a marathon. Please don’t give up”. It was the test of my determination, so I let the positive side win.

Afterward, I entered numerous small 5k 10k and half marathon races to lose weight and increase my stamina throughout the year. Finally came the big day. The day of the Manchester Marathon, for which I was constantly preparing myself. It was a rough ride. The arduous road of the marathon was about to test my willpower. I gathered strength and started running. I am thankful to my body for letting me do something that day I could hardly imagine doing. I retained the conviction that my efforts held a purpose. A purpose to complete this race. Determination is the only step between possible and impossible. I took that step seriously and became victorious.

I gained self-confidence after that Manchester marathon. When you gain a positive thing, any negativity residing inside your body will ultimately get blurred. Well! I had a bad arm injury that didn’t allow me to do my training. But I’m a fighter, and now I’m training myself for the London Marathon. I know it is very hard to start from scratch. The only disadvantage of the rest days is that they will take away the stamina you had. It will make you lethargic. But I am not afraid to start over because I know the secret to success is to never give up. The London Marathon is going to be held in April 2023. I have only four months to rebuild my pace and train myself for the big day. But deep down I know, I WILL ACE IT!

To anyone who finds running the hardest thing. Please run. Start with small goals and build up your pace. Running can significantly improve your self-confidence, mental health, and overall life quality, and delays aging. If you run regularly, your bones become stronger because running itself is a weight-bearing exercise. Running will not only burn plenty of fat for you, but it will also make your muscles stronger.
